Jorge Álvarez Troncoso

Pietro Ameri

Pietro Ameri is Associate Professor of Cardiovascular Diseases and Coordinator of the PhD Program in Translational and Clinica Internal Medicine at the University of Genova, Italy. He also leads the Translational Cardiovascular Unit and the cardio-oncology service at the affiliated hospital IRCCS Ospedale Policlinico San Martino. He is currently Secretary of the ESC Council of Cardio-oncology and has served as chairperson of the first ESC Cardio-Oncology Conference.
His primary interests are cardio-oncology and heart failure, including pulmonary hypertension.

Dr Bucciarelli-Ducci is a consultant cardiologist and imaging specialist at the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals, Guys’ and St Thomas NHS Trust in London, United Kingdom. She is also an honorary Reader (Associate Professor) at the School of Biomedical Engineer and Imaging Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences at King’s College London. From 2010 to 2021 she developed and led with colleagues the CMR Unit of the Bristol Heart Institute at the University Hospitals Bristol NHS Trust and a senior lecturer in cardiology and cardiac imaging at the University of Bristol. In 2012 she was awarded a PhD in CMR at the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI), Imperial College London. She has collected over 10 international awards, the latest being Imperial College Alumni Emerging leaders award in 2022.

Since 2019 she is also the Chief Executive Officer of the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR) with headquarters in the United States. She is currently completing an MSc in Health Economics at the London School of Economics.

She is the past European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI) Vice-President and chair of the cardiac MRI section (2016-2018), within the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and past Secretary of the EACVI (2018-2019). Since September 2020, she is the Deputy Editor (Imaging) of the European Heart Journal. She is in the editorial board of JACC Cardiovascular Imaging, Circulation Cardiovascular Imaging and European Heart Journal Cardiovascular Imaging. She is an enthusiast advocate on the use of cardiovascular imaging to improve patients’ diagnostics, management and thus prognosis.

Dimitrios Farmakis

Dimitrios Farmakis, MD, PhD, FESC, FHFA, is an Ass. Professor of Cardiology and head of the Cardio-Oncology Clinic and the Cardiac Clinic for Haemoglobinopathies at Athens University Hospital “Attikon”, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) Medical School, Greece and an academic advisor to Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF).

He has a long teaching experience at under- and/or post-graduate level at the NKUA, the European University Cyprus, the University of Cyprus and the University of Zurich. He has further been invited as a speaker or chair to more than 350 congresses.

His research spans heart failure, cardio-oncology and hemoglobinopathy-associated heart disease. Cristina Feijoo Cano

José Javier Fuster

José Javier Fuster, PhD is Associate Professor and Group Leader at the Spanish National Center for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC) in Madrid (Spain), where he is also the Coordinator of the Scientific Program on Novel Mechanisms of Atherosclerosis. His research group at CNIC investigates the interplay between the hematopoietic and the cardiovascular systems in the context of cardiovascular disease, with a particular focus on the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis and heart failure. He is internationally recognized for his pioneering work on age-related clonal hematopoiesis and its impact on cardiovascular disease.

María Rosaria Galdiero

Maria Rosaria Galdiero is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the Department of Tanslational Medical Sciences (DisMeT), University of Naples Federico II, Naples (Italy).
She had her Master’s Degree in Medicine and Surgery summa cum laude in 2007, and Residency in Allergy and Clinical Immunology in 2012. Then she moved to Milan, where she had her PhD at the Humanitas Clinical and Research Center in 2015. She then come back to Naples and after a post-doctoral fellowship, she become Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine in 2016.
Prof. Galdiero research activity was focused on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of innate immunity and inflammation in health and disease, with particular reference to the role played by phagocytes in cancer and to the mechanisms underlying the bidirectional cross-talk between human phagocytes and neoplastic cells.

Valentín García

Hematologist. Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal, Madrid

Valentín García-Gutiérrez obtained his medical degree from the University of Granada in 2003. He completed his residency in Hematology and Hemotherapy at Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal in Madrid, where he also earned his PhD and served as a clinical hematologist on the bone marrow transplant ward. During his tenure, he led programs focused on myeloproliferative disorders. In 2016, he was appointed Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Alcalá, Spain.

Dr. García-Gutiérrez has collaborated with prestigious international institutions, including the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (Leukemia Department and Bone Marrow Transplantation Program), the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán (Leukemia Department) in Mexico City, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (Bone Marrow Transplantation Center) in the United States.

He has been the principal investigator for over 45 clinical trials (phases II–IV) focused on chronic myeloproliferative disorders and bone marrow transplantation. Additionally, he coordinates six national clinical trials on chronic myeloid leukemia. His extensive research has resulted in over 150 international publications, contributions to eight national guidelines, and authorship of ten book chapters. He is a frequent speaker at national and international hematology congresses.

Currently, Dr. García-Gutiérrez serves as President of the Spanish Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Group (GELMC) and Vice President of the Spanish Society of Hematology and Hemotherapy. He was recently appointed as Head of Area 3 (Cancer) at the Ramón y Cajal Health Research Institute (IRYCIS). His work has secured significant public and private funding, notably through projects such as PI21 and PI24 in 2021.

Dr. García-Gutiérrez’s research focuses on the prognostic characterization of hematological malignancies, treatment responses, and the immune characterization of oncohematological patients undergoing diverse therapeutic approaches, including the immune response to infections.

Inés García Lunar

Dr. Inés García-Lunar (MD, PhD, FESC) is a cardiologist specialized in non-invasive cardiovascular imaging and a group leader at the National Center for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC) in Madrid, where she also serves as clinical co-leader of the scientific program on New Mechanisms of Atherosclerosis. After completing her training in Medicine and Cardiology in Madrid, she specialized in advanced cardiovascular imaging at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. She has over 10 years of experience in clinical cardiology, cardiovascular imaging, and translational research as well as in population-based cardiovascular cohorts at the CNIC. José Ángel Hernández Rivas

Dr José-Ángel Hernández-Rivas is Head of the Hematology Service at the Infanta Leonor University Hospital in Madrid, Spain. He is also Associate Professor of the Department of Medicine of the Complutense University of Madrid. He belongs to the main Scientific Societies related to the specialty and collaborates in various cooperative scientific groups at a national and European level.

He completed his training as a resident intern at the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital in Badalona (Barcelona) and has a Master's Degree in Health Management and Management from the Collegiate Medical Organization, a Master's Degree in University Education from the European University of Madrid and a Master's Degree in Hematopoietic Transplantation from the University of Valencia, Spain. In addition, he has completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Management for Hematologists at the Pompeu i Fabra University of Barcelona and the IESE Health Management and Executive Development Program.

Since 2008 he has been a Doctor of Medicine with an extraordinary award thesis, with a study on prognostic factors from the biological point of view in CLL. It is in this field where he has carried out his main research career.

He is the author of 233 publications in books and biomedical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Blood, Journal of Hematology and Oncology, Lancet Haematology, Hemasphere, Leukemia or Haematologica, among others, and 490 communications in Hematology meetings.

Dr. Hernández Rivas is the principal investigator in more than a hundred clinical trials, a reviewer of articles in 30 peer-reviewed journals, has directed doctoral theses and end-of-degree projects in Medicine and the end of a Master's degree, belongs to the Agency's Network of Experts Spanish Medicine and Health Products, is a Reviewer of the Health Research Fund of Spain and has accreditation by ANECA for Full Professor of Medicine.

Oliver Higuera

Licenciado en Medicina y Cirugía por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid en 2008.
Especialidad de Oncología Médica en el Hospital Universitario de la Paz en el periodo de 2009 a 2014. Desde entonces, forma parte del Servicio Oncología médica, perteneciendo a la Unidad de Cáncer Heredofamiliar y de la Unidad de Neoplasias torácicas en ese mismo hospital.
Como parte de su formación, ha realizado varios másteres y títulos de experto y ha sido ponente y autor de publicaciones nacionales e internacionales relacionadas con neoplasias torácicas. Actualmente forma parte del grupo de “Terapias experimentales y Biomarcadores en Cáncer” del Instituto de Investigación de la Paz (IDIPAZ).

Borja Ibáñez

Borja Ibáñez, nacido en Madrid en 1975, es médico por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y doctor por la Autónoma de Madrid. Cardiólogo formado en la Fundación Jiménez Díaz, recibió formación en investigación en el Mount Sinaí Medical Center de Nueva York entre los años 2005 y 2008.

Desde su regreso a España, el Dr. Ibáñez compagina su actividad investigadora en el Centro Nacional e Investigaciones Cardiovasculares (CNIC), donde es actualmente director Científico del Centro (siendo el director general el Dr Valentín Fuster) y además director del Departamento de Investigación Clínica, con la actividad clínica, atendiendo pacientes como cardiólogo intervencionista en el Hospital Universitario Fundación Jiménez Díaz. Su actividad clínica y científica se ha centrado en el estudio de las enfermedades del músculo cardiaco (miocardio), haciendo contribuciones relevantes en el campo del infarto agudo de miocardio y en el de la protección cardiaca en pacientes con cáncer que reciben tratamientos con potencial dañino sobre el sistema cardiovascular.

Dirige estudios multinacionales financiados por la Comisión Europea, incluyendo la realización de ensayos clínicos y ha publicado más de 400 artículos científicos en las revistas más prestigiosas a nivel mundial, siendo uno de los autores más referenciados en Europa. Ha recibido financiación competitiva de agencias nacionales e internacionales de forma ininterrumpida desde 2010. Ha sido elegido por la Sociedad Europea de Cardiología como el responsable de coordinar las guías de práctica clínica para el tratamiento de pacientes con infarto agudo de miocardio en dos ocasiones (2017 y 2023), siendo el “Chairman” más joven de la historia de la Sociedad Europea de Cardiología, y el único que ha repetido en esta tarea.

Es inventor de múltiples patentes, relacionadas con tratamiento para enfermedades cardiovasculares y de desarrollo de nuevas secuencias de resonancia magnética para adquisición acelerada (transformando un estudio de resonancia magnética estándar de 60 minutos en tan sólo 40 segundos).

Ha recibido múltiples premios de investigación, destacando el Premio Princesa Girona en 2010, premio fundación Banco Sabadell en 2017, premio constantes y vitales en 2020, premio Fundación Occident en 2021. Galardonado con orden del mérito “Cruz Azul Zendal-Balmis” por su lucha contra la pandemia COVID19. The main goal of his lab is to explore pathophysiologic mechanisms and therapeutic targets in cardiac dysfunction, with a particular interest on post-ischemic HF, genetic and inflammatory cardiomyopathies, Pulmonary Hypertension and RV dysfunction, and HF due to antineoplastic therapies, including novel anticancer immunotherapies and biologic drugs employed in inflammatory diseases.

Peter van der Meer

Professor Peter van der Meer, MD, PhD

Peter van der Meer is a clinical cardiologist and chair of the Department of Experimental Cardiology at University Medical Center Groningen. He is also a Professor of Heart Failure and Translational Cardiology at the University of Groningen. Peter received both his MD and PhD cum laude from the University of Groningen, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School to train his skills in stem cell biology. His research group consists of PhD students and post-docs with various backgrounds (biologists, medical doctors and biomedical-engineers) working on translational research topics to bridge the gap between the bench and bedside. Professor van der Meer’s research focusses on understanding the susceptibility to develop heart failure and on exploring novel treatment targets and therapies. In 2024 he was voted by his peers as president-elect of the Council of CardioOncology of the ESC and member of the taskforce of the ESC who wrote the first Guidelines on Cardio-Oncology. He has received funding from several agencies including the Dutch Heart Foundation, NWO, European Union H2020 program, the HFSP and has been awarded an ERC starting and ERC consolidator grant.
